Worms, Worms, Worms

200236712-001It has rained every day since I can remember. It’s far and away the wettest October here on record.  Last night, it rained an inch in a half hour.  This is not a great way to enjoy your new work-from-home situation.  As it stands, I’m cooped up in here with a dog who doesn’t understand that me being home doesn’t mean we’re going to run in fields of gold every day until he’s tired, which means he looks at me and whines to go out every 20 minutes.  Then he goes on the porch and realizes that its really fucking wet out there and kinda half-asses it like maybe if he just sticks his nose out and get it wet that he can get away with NOT getting his precious fur coat wet but still get a treat out of me.    Every 20 minutes, no joke.  I just BRIBED MY DOG, y’all, with a bone filled with peanut butter so he’d quit whining long enough for me to type this.  I am a sucker.  Also, he pooped inside this week while I was at my boss’s place and THEN ATE IT.

Everyone around here is going stir crazy because this fall sucks.  Not only are we cooped inside and feeling denied from missing out out on typical dry fall festivities, but everything is muddy and smells like worms and wet dog.  The end of my garden was a total failure because even though we’ve staved off a frost, try getting anything to ripen when you feel like you’ve won the lottery if the sun comes out for a measly 45 minutes like (I think) it did the other day.  I laugh hysterically when I think about how I was going to plant garlic in October? Did I mention I had to completely give up caffeine?  Yup, I was getting these weird heart palpitations.  I quit for fun this summer, and it’s totally much easier to quit when it’s 90 degrees outside.  Now, I just want to curl up with a cup of something other than herbal tea sometimes.  If I’m going to live in Seattle, I need some joe.

Then last night I totally had this thought.  What if this is, like, permanent?  Like, it’s ALWAYS going to be raining, like an apocalyptic sci-fi book?  I once read this book by T.C. Boyle, A Friend of the Earth, which is set in the not-so-distant future, a future where climate change has started to significantly impact our way of life.  Basically, it either rains incessantly, to the point where everything is flooded, or it’s a complete, oppressive drought.  The only thing people eat is rice and catfish.  What if that’s what’s happening?  What if this rain never passes?  What if we’re totally fucked?  There’s only so much Elliott Smith we can listen to, you know? We should probably start building an ark, or at least some hydroponic growing systems.  I will look into the latter.

In other news, the St Louis Symphony Orchestra is hosting their third Bloggers Night tonight, so Chris and I get to go see the preview for their Carnegie Hall program.  Thanks to the lovely Courtney Chesley who passed my name along to the SLSO staff.  They must not know that this bitch played violin from elementary until she graduated from high school.  True story.  I even played in the Des Moines Youth Symphony and the Des Moines Youth Chamber Players.  Then I chose soccer over violin for college and my violin teacher never talked to me again.  ANYWAY, I do love classical music and have never had the chance to go see the symphony here, so we’re very excited and I’ll blog about it next week.  If you are going, come say hi to me.  I’ll be the one with the Jheri Curl, seeing as the white-girl ‘fro ain’t had a chance to dry out in a minute.

Also, today might be payday for some of you.  If it is, please take a minute and donate a few bucks to DonorsChoose. We fully funded all three projects for the BlogHer Challenge, but there are still tons of projects in your area that need help.  It will make you feel happy.

This weekend: kickball (ha! probably not), Halloween, brunch with lovely Meghan for her birthday, and homework.  See you Monday, where I will recap the symphony and my not-as-boss-as-last-year’s-costume as well as everyone else’s.

Let’s hope this holds out, yes?

Violin is one of my favorite instruments. So is cello. I have put ‘Learn to play cello’ on my Bucket List.
